Each year, the Writers’ Place Awards (formerly the Printer’s Devil) recognizes outstanding essays from composition students at Arizona State University. The contest is open to Tempe Campus composition students who have completed or are currently enrolled in one of the following ten courses during the regular academic year:  ENG 101, ENG 102, ENG 105,  ENG 107, ENG 108, ENG 215, ENG 216, ENG 217, and ENG 218.

The Writers’ Place has a Facebook page to recognize the process of writing that students and faculty engage throughout the year. Students and faculty are encouraged to visit the Writers’ Place page and respond to the various questions and ideas of other writers at Arizona State and the surrounding community.

Deadline for Submissions

Submissions are accepted throughout the fall and spring semesters, and we strongly encourage early submissions. Friday, April 12, 2024 at 11:59pm AZ time is the deadline for submissions for the 2023-2024 AY awards.

Submission Requirements

Students may submit only one submission per class category.

For example, a student may submit one paper for English 101 and one paper for English 102, but not more than one for either course. Students must be enrolled at the Tempe Campus.

Instructors may submit a paper on behalf of a student with that student's permission.**

Copy and paste items 1-3 below into ONE Word document. Please do not send in zipped files or multiple files in one email.  Submit your single file to ASUWritersPlace@gmail.com. Only Word or RTF files will be accepted.* see note on multi-modal projects below

  1.  Download and complete the entry form WritersPlaceSubmissionForm.doc
  2. Underneath the entry form copy/paste the assignment prompt/handout - be sure to remove the instructor's name from the handout if present.
  3. Underneath the prompt, copy/paste the  finished paper/project. The paper/project must include a title and should NOT include the author’s name or the instructor's name anywhere on the paper (double check your headers/footers and page numbers for names).
Do NOT send Google Docs, Open Office files or other types of files. They will not be considered for judging. Your file name should include your course number and last name, such as ENG101Smith.docx.
Incomplete entries will not be considered. No paper submissions will be accepted.

A NOTE ON MULTIMODAL PROJECTS: If you are sending a multimodal assignment, a two-part submission that includes the submission form, assignment prompt &/or paper as one file and a separate file for the project is acceptable, simply include 1 and 2 in your file name (e.g. ENG101Smith1.docx and ENG101Smith2.mp3). Please include all submissions in a single email. Multimodal submissions must be Windows and Mac OS compatible. PDF files will be accepted for the multimodal portion of the project, but your submission form, prompt and any text/essay must be in Word or RTF format. Remove all names and course information from your multimodal project before submission.

Where to Submit

Please submit your file to ASUWritersPlace@gmail.com. The contest runs from the beginning of the Fall semester until the end of the Spring semester each year. Make sure you remove all names from your paper so that only your submission application page contains your name information. Submit your electronic submission as a RTF or Word document (doc or docx). PDF files will be accepted for multimodal assignments that include photos, videos, or other non-essay forms.

Prizes

Three prizes are typically made available for each course or category.  The 2022-2023 prizes for each category were: the first prize winner won $120, the second prize winner won $95, and the third prize winner won $70. Prize values may vary from year to year based on the awards budget. These  awards are credited to the students’ university accounts.  Judges reserve the right to award fewer than three prizes per course/category if, in their view, three award-caliber papers are not received in a course/category or funding requirements demand it.

RECOGNITION

The Writers’ Place winners will be recognized on our Facebook page. Winners also will be asked to sign a release so that their papers may be published on this portfolio.
