Sarah's Adventurer Interviews

Interview #1:

Name of Adventurer: Donna Scrivner

Credentials: RN, BSN

Suggestions for skills: In summary, she believes that we need to have good communication skills, organizational skills (in order to meet an end-point and/or goal), as well as needing to be knowledgeable about the specifics of what our educational topics are.

Interview #2:

Name of Adventurer: Christina Horneman

Credentials: Masters Degree in Education

Suggestions for skills: In general, Christy suggests that in order for us to communicate clearly with the school districts/children in Mexico we must first understand the structure of the Mexican school district. There is a different culture we will be communicating with, and we need to understand how different scholarship programs, etc. will be able to help/fit with children in these districts.

Interview #3:

Name of Adventurer: Thomas Scrivner

Credentials: Masters in Buisness

Suggestions for skills: If the group is to have a buisness plan on how to reach out to the different schools in the district in order to meet with the children, then the group needs to make sure the "cause" can be realistically financially supported by our funds. He suggested developing our skills in money management and to reach out to nonprofit organizations, or consider becoming one ourselves.

Katherine's Adventurer Interviews

Interview #1:

Name of Adventurer: Alex Joncas

Credentials: Master's Degree; English Professor for Maricopa Community Colleges

Suggestions for skills:

“I suggest that you propose the establishment of a mentoring program perhaps targeting a certain group of kids at a specific grade level (6th? 8th?) and keeping them connected to the same mentor through the years.  The mentor can serve several roles such as giving the kids tips on how to be a successful student and even offering them some tutoring time and then also teach them how to complete scholarship applications in such a way that they will actually get the scholarship. The assignment of mentors, their roles and keeping them connected to students is important.”

Interview #2:

Name of Adventurer: Gerri Joncas

Credentials: Bachelor's Degree; Special Education Teacher for Peoria School District

Suggestions for skills:

“I like the premise of your adventure: ‘The laser vision of our group is to encourage and assist the youth of Mexico to attain and succeed in higher education’. As a special education teacher, I champion and encourage learning and the notion of being a lifelong learner. Wherever the students are living, I believe the most important thing is for students to learn how to learn. As you encourage the young students of Mexico to attain higher education I would try to also make sure they are learning how to learn, as that will ultimately be even more valuable to them than the memorization of dates, formulas, and lists. If they are successful in learning how to learn it will benefit them as they seek to attain higher education, as they attend college, and as they work afterwards in jobs that require ongoing learning.”

Interview #3:

Name of Adventurer:  Meagan Turpin

Credentials:  Associates Degree; Biller

Suggestions for skills:  "I think that your team's mission sounds amazing and I think would be greatly appreciated by the people of Mexico. I would suggest putting one person especially in charge of your budget and watching costs to ensure that you all are covered while you are down there. I also would make sure that before you start presenting figures, scholarships, and grants to students that you have several examples already worked out on paper to use as visual aids. Some people learn better visually rather than being told how to do it or what it all means. Other than than I wish you all the best of luck!"

How do you think our project would do in this area of Mexico?

It sounds like a very important thing. I think it would be lovely to be apart of such a program. I would get donations from my company and others in the area to help your group educate and serve the goals and needs for these students and their families. You could also use the website to drive donations to your cause if you gave Chick-Fil-A a prospectus and a project plan with  your goals clearly defined. You have a team who could use a wide set skills since your backgrounds and careers are so very different.

SKIlls: Project Planning, Public Relations, Pomotion and Recruiting.

I love the idea. We are so blessed in America. We have such opportunity all around us and I am so proud when I see American’s sharing overseas. I think this is something you could also do in America. Every community has students that just get missed or that do not take the opportunity they are given for many different reasons.

My husband could really use this opportunity. He is about to retire and he has wanted to give to our community and communities around the United States. I think how your group has organized this is very cost effective and should work in reality.

This is something my husband’s employer has set as a goal for the entire team. They have given to the recent disasters in Texas and the South. More corporation should come together to help the uneducated in the rural areas of Central And South America as well as North America. The Alaskan’s have a need also and they are in America.

Skills: Coordinaotr of Educations, Tax speciallist to eable your group to help with the tax information. Finacial audior to help iwth the use of your sponsors moneiw and keep the leagal stuff straight.

This is a great program that will work. It is something many countries around the globe would benefit from. Choosing a location close to home will be an excellent place to learn and see what and where the resource funds should go to. Spanish speaking volunteers are needed. This could be an opportunity to learn and practice your spanish and also help the locals to learn English. This is a win-win opportunity. To work globally each country around the globe has mastered English, Spanish or Cantonese. Teaching them English as your team learns Spanish would really allow you to replicate this project very efficiently and quickly.

Tax offical who can keep your books correct and make sure everyone uses propper accounting. Spanish intrprester even if you can speak it it is best to have another to keep your understanding clear. Local lawyer and this is key to keep you on the right side of the law.

Great ideas and best of luck.- John K.
